Sherlock writer and creator Mark Gatiss has delighted fans by breaking the news that series four is officially in the works.
The writer - who also portrays Mycroft Holmes in the drama - shared the news on Twitter yesterday (30/03/2016) afternoon.
Alongside the tweet, he added a picture of a skull wearing sunglasses, and rather unsurprisingly fans of the show have gone into meltdown. They too took to twitter to vent their excitement. One user tweeted: “@Markgatiss All the fans scream YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" as another followed: “@Markgatiss Only another 18 months or so of hype to go!"
Alongside the excitement, there is sadness. It's likely that the series won't be shown on The BBC until early 2017. There have also been suggestions that the show will be made into a full length feature film after the recent Christmas special The Abominable Bride proved to big money-maker in cinemas worldwide.
