Introducing - Curxes
Many bands who break through nowadays have a weak aesthetic style. Not to mention a musical style that is just regurgitated from times gone by (*cough* Catfish and The Bottlemen). Portsmouth-based Curxes however have uniqueness across the board. A quick look at the photos on the Facebook page belonging to the group suggests a retro feel. Retro is a word I wouldn't use to describe the music. In fact it's quite futuristic. In basic terms it's synth-pop on steroids but there is a soul behind the aggressiveness.
As I write this feature, I learn that two of the trio have actually left the band, and now Roberta Fidora is the focal point of the name Curxes.
An example of that aggressive synth-pop aforementioned is track 'Avant-Garded' which is taken from the Curxes' first full length album Verxes. There are elements of Crystal Castles and Chvrches within but whereas at times Crystal Castles can be incomprehensible at times lyrically, this isn't a problem when listening to Curxes. Verxes is a really refreshing album that leaves you guessing only to find that you're wrong all the time. 'Further Still'is a shimmering light that floats across a blackened sky whereas tracks like 'Ghosts' and 'Valkyrie' are extremely dark and punky.
Where Curxes go from here is up to Roberta. But following in the same vain wouldn't be a terrible thing. There is a lot of great underground electronic music buzzing around the airwaves, and Verxes is a perfect example of this.
