5 Minutes With........METZ
After their first ever show back in 2007, Canadian three-piece Metz have released two albums to high acclaim. Since then they have become one of the loudest bands from the country and they're making edgeways across the atlantic. Described by Pitchfork as the most brutalizing band from Toronto we spoke to the bands bass player Chris Slorach about their music, authenticity and their most recent album.
3. Is there much of a rock scene or
music that’s similar to you in Ontario? And if so, who kick started this?
4. What’s the craziest gig you’ve ever
played?
1. You have a very aggressive sound,
are there any particular bands that influence your sound?
There are a ton of bands that
influence us. We all agree on lots of bands from the DC hardcore scene in
the 80s as well as loads of SST bands. Aside from that lots of old psych
rock and beat bands.
2. Your music definitely has something
unique about it. How important (if at all) is being authentic and not following
what other bands have already done?
It’s very important to be
your own band and have your own sound. Comparisons will come naturally but you
should focus on doing your own thing whenever you can.
There is and always has been
a good music scene in Ontario. For as long as i’ve lived here there has
been no shortage of local bands doing something interesting. One of the best
things about Toronto is the eclectic music scene. On any night of the
week you can take in a great show.
We’ve played so many shows
it’s hard to narrow it down. I remember a particular show in Bristol, UK being
pretty insane.
5. Do you find that audiences differ
when you travel from country to country?
Sure, every place has a
different way of showing their appreciation. I think that’s part of the
charm in touring.
6. Your new album came out earlier this
year, what song on the record are you most proud of?
That’s like asking a parent
of 10 which is their favourite child. Far too difficult to answer.
7. Do you have full control when
producing your albums to make them sound the way you want? Or do you have some
help from your record label?
We have full control
8. Is there any song that you wished you
had written?
Happy birthday, the royalties
would be insane.
9. In some reviews written by
publications, you are likened a lot to the grunge bands of the 90s, what band
would you liken yourselves to?
I like to leave comparisons
to the people who make them for a living.
