Eagulls Album Review
Eagulls hail from Leeds UK, and their debut album came out on the 4th of March 2014. The album is mysterious yet powerful and is a mixture of post-punk sounds with deep atmosphere, similar to Drenge, the instant feel for the album is anger, but don't let that put you off this album!
"A sound as burnt out as the car on the album cover and the ashes from that car are used to paint their sound" Is a fantastic description of what this album sounds like. Sure, there are some rough edges but that's part of it, and there are some great melodies mixed in with the unhinged sound.
Eagulls are a band who sound like they have something to prove, the first track on the album is "Nerve Endings" suitably titles as it will strike at the nerves of anyone listening. The punchy guitar sounds coupled with George Mitchell's vocals is a match made in heaven, the song has a thunderous rhythm similar to that of early post-punk bands such as Misfits. There are also sounds reminiscent of Joy Division on the album too, not the vocals, but the drum beats and the bass lines, "Hollow Visions" is a perfect example of that.
The album steps up a gear on track four which is called "Tough Luck" it is very melodic which goes against the previous tracks but it still has the thunderous drums but it's the guitars and vocals that give this song life, Mitchell's lyrics are dark and are delivered with a yelp and shout which only add's to the song. "touch wood, tough luck" sounds more like chilling consequence as a result of somethings rather than a lighthearted activity. "Amber Veins" is written about neighbourhood heroin addicts who are desperate for a fix, and the song sounds like an anthem for a lost generation.
My personal favourite from the album is "Footsteps" which sticks to what we know about Eagulls, with the ever present bass and drums, but the song sounds like an escape from something and a chase. It might have something to do with the heroin addicts mentioned earlier, and it screams danger, Mitchell may not mention danger in the lyrics but the eerie guitar clangs and the drums representing a raised heartbeat paints a picture of running through an abandoned building late at night with something following you and with the scream of "follow footsteps" it raises the pulse even more.
Overall the album is full of anger and spite but there are some great melodies in there too, it may take a couple of listens but stick with it.
8/10
